At Oceanic Dental Laboratory, our zirconia crowns are crafted using precise 3D scans from the patient, impression, or model.
The zirconia core is milled from a single block in its pre-sintered state. Once milled, it is sintered to achieve its full strength of 1200 MPa (a measure of material strength), making it approximately five times stronger than porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. This ensures long-lasting and reliable restorations.
Aesthetic Zirconia Restorations
Zirconia crowns are highly aesthetic, mimicking the appearance of natural teeth by reflecting light in the same way. This makes them an excellent choice for anterior teeth, offering a realistic, streamlined, and less bulky alternative to some porcelain veneers.
Benefits of a Zirconia Restoration
Biocompatibility: Zirconia is biologically safe, long-lasting, and unlikely to be rejected by the body.
Aesthetic Advantage: Unlike porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, zirconia crowns avoid the risk of a visible black gum line.
Preservation of Natural Tooth: Zirconia crowns require less preparation, allowing more of the natural tooth structure to be retained. This benefits both the dentist by saving time and the patient, especially if the crown needs removal or replacement in the future.
Considerations When Choosing Zirconia
While zirconia crowns are growing in popularity, some dentists still prefer alternatives like PFM crowns or gold. This is due to zirconia’s extremely durable nature, which may sometimes cause friction against the tooth root or neighbouring teeth. Additionally, decay beneath a zirconia crown can be harder to detect until the crown becomes loose or falls off.
Types of Zirconia Dental Restorations
Fully-Milled Zirconia
- Ideal for posterior crowns.
- High strength (1200 MPa), suitable for large-span bridges and implant restorations.
- Moderate translucency with 8 basic shades that can be individually characterised.
- Effectively blocks out underlying stump discolouration.
Ultra-Translucent Zirconia
- Available in full-milled or layered designs.
- Strength of 600 MPa, ideal for anterior restorations.
- High translucency, comparable to e.max® with superior strength.
- Does not block out underlying stump discolouration, offering a natural look.
Porcelain Fused to Zirconia (PFZ)
- Versatile, combining aesthetics and strength.
- High durability and customisable.
- Milled zirconia frameworks fused with Vita VM 7 porcelain.
- Suitable for large-span bridges, implants, and full-mouth restorations.
- Great translucency and effectively blocks out stump discolouration.
